The most personalized and meaningful word in a child’s world is his or her name.  The best way to encourage emergent literacy is through learning children's names. Before they start to write their names, they first have to recognize and orally spell their names.

This I Can Read My Name Book has two versions for you to download. By identifying these commonly seen animals and sight words, children can gradually learn to read their name book and then recognize/spell their names. Give your children choices which pictures they like to put in their name book and they will be so proud of having their own first name book that they can read to friends and family members.

This can be done each day as 2-minute morning work upon children arrive in the class or once in each week for review.
